Understanding NIHB

What is NIHB mental health counselling?

The Non-Insured Health Benefits program is administered by Indigenous Services Canada and provides eligible First Nations and Inuit clients with coverage for a range of health benefits, including professional mental health counselling.

Access counselling with support through NIHB

Eligible clients may receive professional mental health counselling from providers who meet NIHB requirements.

When counselling services are eligible and approved, participating providers can generally submit eligible claims directly through NIHB.

Our administrative team can help you understand what information is needed before your first appointment and what next steps may apply.

NIHB Eligibility

Who may qualify for NIHB counselling?

NIHB eligibility is determined by Indigenous Services Canada. If you are unsure whether you qualify, you can still contact our team and we can help explain the information generally required to confirm coverage.

Eligible First Nations Clients

Registered First Nations clients who meet NIHB eligibility requirements may be eligible for covered mental health counselling.

Eligible Inuit Clients

Recognized Indigenous clients who meet program requirements may also receive mental health counselling benefits through NIHB.

Coverage Confirmation

Eligibility, available benefits and any required approvals should be confirmed before treatment begins.

Individualized Care

Therapy built around you

Our clinicians work collaboratively with clients rather than applying the same approach to everyone.

Depending on your therapist, goals and needs, treatment may draw from approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, mindfulness-based approaches, attachment-focused therapy, narrative therapy, Internal Family Systems-informed work, somatic approaches and trauma-focused modalities.

Your treatment plan can evolve as therapy progresses and as your needs change.
