When seeking mental health support, you may come across different titles, such as Registered Psychologist and Registered Provisional Psychologist. While both professionals provide counselling and psychological services, there are key differences in their qualifications and roles. However, both are equally great options for receiving high-quality mental health care.

What is a Registered Psychologist?

A Registered Psychologist is a fully licensed professional who has completed the necessary education, training, and supervision requirements set by the regulatory body in their province. In Alberta, this means:

  • Holding a master’s or doctoral degree in psychology
  • Completing extensive supervised practice
  • Passing the required exams, including the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP)
  • Meeting continuing education requirements to maintain their license

Registered Psychologists are qualified to assess, diagnose, and treat various mental health concerns. They use evidence-based approaches to support clients with challenges like anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationship issues. They can also provide psychological assessments and reports for various needs, including workplace accommodations and legal matters.

What is a Registered Provisional Psychologist?

A Registered Provisional Psychologist is in the final stage of becoming a fully licensed psychologist. They have completed their education but are still undergoing supervised practice. In Alberta, provisional psychologists must:

  • Hold a master’s or doctoral degree in psychology
  • Work under the supervision of a fully registered psychologist
  • Complete a specified number of supervised practice hours
  • Pass the EPPP and other required examinations before becoming fully licensed

Provisional psychologists offer counselling and psychological services while working under supervision to ensure high-quality care. They follow the same ethical guidelines and professional standards as registered psychologists and can support clients with various mental health concerns.

Which One is Right for You?

Both Registered Psychologists and Registered Provisional Psychologists provide equally great mental health support. Choosing between them depends on your needs and preferences. Working with a provisional psychologist can be a great option if you’re looking for affordable care while still receiving professional support under supervision.
