Pregnancy & Postpartum Counselling

Pregnancy and the postpartum period can bring major emotional, physical and relational changes.

We provide supportive, evidence-based counselling for people experiencing anxiety, low mood, overwhelm, identity changes, relationship stress, birth-related concerns and the emotional demands of adjusting to pregnancy or new parenthood.

Our therapists offer a compassionate space to process what you are experiencing, understand changes in your mental health and develop practical strategies for coping with this significant life transition.

You Do Not Have to Be in Crisis to Seek Support

Many people seek counselling during pregnancy or after having a baby because they feel unlike themselves, more anxious or emotional than expected, overwhelmed by new responsibilities or unsure how to adjust to changes in identity, relationships and daily life.

Mental Health During Pregnancy

Pregnancy can involve excitement and anticipation, but it can also bring uncertainty, physical discomfort, changes in relationships and increased worry about health, birth and the future.

Some people experience increased anxiety, low mood, irritability or difficulty coping during pregnancy, even when the pregnancy itself is wanted and progressing as expected.

Counselling can provide space to explore these experiences without pressure to feel a particular way about pregnancy or becoming a parent.

Postpartum Depression, Anxiety & Adjustment

The postpartum period can involve major changes in sleep, routine, relationships, responsibilities and identity. Emotional difficulties during this time can range from feeling overwhelmed or disconnected to more persistent symptoms of depression or anxiety.

Postpartum mental health concerns do not always look like sadness. They may include excessive worry, irritability, guilt, intrusive thoughts, difficulty relaxing, emotional numbness, feeling disconnected or struggling to enjoy things.

Counselling can help you understand what you are experiencing and develop support strategies that fit your individual circumstances.

Identity & Relationship Changes

Becoming a parent can change how you experience yourself, your relationships and your priorities. It is possible to love your child while also grieving freedom, routine, career changes, independence or parts of your previous identity.

Partners may also experience changes in communication, intimacy, responsibilities and expectations. Counselling can help individuals and couples navigate these transitions with greater understanding and flexibility.

Our Approach

Our therapists use a client-centred, trauma-informed approach grounded in evidence-based and evidence-informed practices.

Counselling is collaborative and individualized. Depending on your needs, sessions may focus on anxiety, depression, emotional regulation, birth experiences, identity, relationships, self-compassion, stress, grief and adjustment to pregnancy or parenthood.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I seek counselling while I am pregnant?

Yes. Counselling can support anxiety, depression, stress, relationship concerns, birth-related fears and other emotional challenges that arise during pregnancy.

How do I know if I have postpartum depression or anxiety?

Postpartum depression and anxiety can include persistent sadness, excessive worry, irritability, guilt, emotional numbness, intrusive thoughts, difficulty relaxing or feeling disconnected. A therapist can help you explore what you are experiencing and determine what support may be helpful.

Can counselling help after a difficult or traumatic birth?

Yes. A difficult, frightening or unexpected birth experience can affect emotional wellbeing after delivery. Counselling can provide space to process the experience and address anxiety, grief, fear or other emotional responses connected to what happened.

Can partners benefit from postpartum counselling too?

Yes. Partners can also experience stress, anxiety, mood changes and adjustment difficulties during pregnancy and after a baby arrives. Individual or couples counselling may help address these changes.

Is pregnancy and postpartum counselling covered by insurance?

Many extended health-benefit plans cover psychological or counselling services. Coverage depends on the practitioner’s designation and your individual plan, so we recommend confirming the details directly with your insurer.
