Body Image Counselling

Struggling with body image can affect far more than how you feel when you look in the mirror.

We provide supportive counselling for teens and adults experiencing body dissatisfaction, appearance-related anxiety, comparison, shame, low confidence or difficulty adjusting to changes in their body.

Therapy can help you understand the beliefs, experiences and pressures shaping your relationship with your body while developing a more balanced and compassionate way of relating to yourself.

Body Image Concerns Can Affect Anyone

Body image difficulties are not limited to one body type, age or gender. Concerns can develop gradually, follow a major life change or become stronger during periods of stress, illness, pregnancy, aging, injury or increased social comparison.

Who This Support Is For

Frequently comparing your body or appearance to other people

Feeling uncomfortable, ashamed or overly critical of your appearance

Avoiding photos, mirrors, clothing, activities or social situations because of body concerns

Feeling that your confidence or self-worth depends heavily on how you look

Struggling to adjust to changes related to pregnancy, aging, illness, injury or medication

Feeling pressure from social media, beauty standards, fitness culture or comments from others

Build self-compassion and greater acceptance of body changes

Feel more comfortable participating in relationships, activities and daily life

Understanding Body Image

Body image includes the thoughts, feelings and beliefs you have about your body and appearance. It can be influenced by relationships, family messages, cultural expectations, social media, past experiences and the standards you feel expected to meet.

A healthier body image does not necessarily mean loving every part of your appearance at all times. Therapy can help you move toward a more balanced relationship with your body so appearance takes up less emotional space in your life.

Body Changes & Life Transitions

Changes to your body can sometimes create an unexpected shift in confidence or identity. Pregnancy, postpartum recovery, menopause, aging, illness, chronic health concerns, injury, surgery and changes in physical ability can all affect how familiar or comfortable your body feels.

Counselling can provide space to process those changes while exploring what confidence, identity and well-being look like in this stage of your life.

Our Approach

Our therapists use a client-centred, trauma-informed approach grounded in evidence-based and evidence-informed practices.

Counselling is collaborative and individualized. Rather than telling you how you should feel about your body, therapy focuses on understanding your experiences, reducing distress and helping you develop a relationship with yourself that feels more supportive and sustainable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have an eating disorder to seek body image counselling?

No. Many people experience body dissatisfaction, appearance anxiety, comparison or low confidence without having an eating disorder. You can seek counselling whenever body image is creating distress or interfering with your quality of life.

Can therapy help me stop comparing myself to other people?

Therapy can help you recognize comparison patterns, understand what triggers them and develop strategies for shifting attention away from unrealistic or unhelpful standards. The goal is not necessarily to eliminate comparison completely, but to reduce the power it has over how you feel about yourself.

Can body image change after pregnancy, illness or injury?

Yes. Changes in appearance, physical ability or the way your body feels can affect confidence, identity and emotional well-being. Counselling can help you process those changes and adjust to your body in its current stage.

Will counselling focus on changing my weight or appearance?

Body image counselling is focused on your emotional well-being and relationship with your body, rather than prescribing changes to your weight or appearance. Your therapist will work collaboratively with you based on your concerns and goals.
